Expert Skincare Diagnosis

Medicine and skincare have always been in natural unity. Even the ancient Egyptians mixed medical recipes with cosmetic formulas.

Alongside advice and quality skincare products, a pharmacist will offer you healing teas for the purification and elimination of toxins from the body, as well as instructions for your diet, liquid intake, and food supplements.

Skin becomes dry if it lacks vitamin A, oily skin prone to acne usually lacks vitamin B2, while vitamin B6 helps in chronic dermatoses.

The Greeks and the Romans developed the art of skin, body, and hair care to perfection. The ancient Greeks got their cosmetics from a pharmacopola (pharmacist). They are described by the famous doctor Hippocrates, and Dioscorides and Galen after him. The term “cosmetics” (Latin ars cosmetica, decoratio, ornatus) includes trades whose purpose is personal care and beauty. Cosmetics includes the cleansing, nourishing, protection, perfuming, and decorating of all parts of the body. Cosmetology comes before all this, as it discovers and applies the effects, procedures, and cosmetic products which can eliminate, delay, mitigate, or hide physical or functional changes which negatively affect aesthetic appearance. Cosmetology developed within medicine, pharmacy, and chemistry, and today the majority of cosmetologists have a university education in medicine, pharmacy, or chemistry.

Diagnosis before action
Stendhal said, “Beauty is the promise of happiness”, and the old saying goes: “Beauty means feeling comfortable in your own skin”. Beauty has always been linked to health, since both beauty and health depend on keeping the body in balance. To be “at the peak of health” and “in all our (beautiful) glory”, we need to take care of all the parts of our body, not just the skin. The appearance of our skin, hair, and nails reflects the state of our body. Every change in the usual appearance of our skin, even the tiniest one, is an indicator of a change in our organism.

In his book “C'est la nature qui a raison”, M. Mességué wrote: “If women used roses for their faces, carrots for their stomachs, and ivy for their bodies, they would know true beauty”. In other words, in addition to external nourishment and protection, skin also needs to be nourished from the inside. The usual skincare creams, milks, and lotions will affect the outer layer of the skin. To affect the deeper layers of the skin, we need to provide it with ingredients which will improve the supply of oxygen and nutrients, therefore improving its quality.

Skin type is mostly genetic. However, it matters whether, for example, dry skin is also sensitive or whether normal skin has visible capillaries or sun spots. It is equally important whether spots and acne are a result of stress, hormonal imbalance, bad digestion and gut flora disorder, or maybe even bacterial infection.

Skincare should be individual and tailored to the skin’s needs. When starting any individually tailored skincare regimen with long-term goals, an expert diagnosis should be made, as this will avoid possible disappointment at a later time. Skincare mistakes have visible and permanent consequences.

A pharmacy has always been a place where one can get advice, not only about healing treatments and their application but also about skincare products and how to use them. Cosmetology and dermatology are regular courses in pharmacy and biochemistry degrees. Therefore, there is no doubt that the pharmacist at your local pharmacy can give you expert advice and full information about the type and the condition of your skin and scalp, as well as about which skincare is suitable for you.
