Lipids in the surface layer of the skin are organised in lamellar form and act like roof tiles, not allowing moisture to leave the deeper layers of the skin. Damage on the surface layer of the skin causes it to crack, lose moisture and become dry, taut and sensitive. The ceramides in NiKEL products come from plant oils and are found in an organised, lyotropic liquid crystal form. Only in such an organised form can they be effective.
