Every skin type has its specificities, and it logically seems to each person that their own skin type is the most demanding and problematic. In short, unbeatable. No matter what one does, it's never good enough. No matter which innovative product one tries, the face remains the same as it was. Of course, it's not quite like that, but few people see themselves objectively. Today, we will focus on oily skin type because individuals who have struggled with oily facial skin their whole lives are almost impossible to convince that they haven't been struck by some natural disaster and that the problems associated with oily skin can be very successfully controlled. The key is, of course, in consistent and appropriate care.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE OILY SKIN TYPE?

Since oily facial skin is characterized by excessive sebum secretion, it is easiest to recognize it by its shine. Therefore, the forehead, nose, and chin on that oily facial skin are shiny due to increased sebum secretion. In addition, oily skin is poorly vascularized, thick, and often has visible enlarged pores, clogged pores, blackheads, prone to the appearance of small whiteheads on the face, as well as acne, and darker spots may be seen. Immediately after cleansing, oily skin may feel dry, but very quickly after that, the skin becomes oily again.

AT WHAT STAGE OF LIFE DOES OILY SKIN OCCUR AND WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?

Oily skin type may be part of genetic inheritance, but there are other triggers. It is most commonly visible in young people during puberty when there is a tendency to develop acne. The causes are clogged pores, increased hormonal activity, and imbalances. However, due to hormonal changes, oily skin may also occur in women entering menopause. It's not a bad idea to check the causes of oily skin appearance in mature years at a medical clinic, as it may be due to a disorder in the pituitary and thyroid glands.

DOES OILY SKIN HAVE ITS ADVANTAGES?

Of course, it would be truly tragic if it didn't. It is precisely because oily skin is thicker than other types and because there is increased sebum secretion in oily skin that makes it resistant to wrinkling. In other words, wrinkles develop more slowly in oily skin types, and the face remains youthful for longer. The barrier to wrinkles is precisely that annoying sebum that makes the face shiny. Namely, oily skin types are more protected from drying out due to increased sebum secretion, so they are more resistant to wrinkle formation. If appropriate care for oily skin is applied, the face will have a beautiful natural shine that other skin types hardly achieve. Not bad, right?

HOW TO CARE FOR OILY SKIN?

In the daily skincare routine of oily skin, the most important thing is to achieve a balance between the excessive oils that have come to the surface and maintaining the skin's natural moisture from within. The task of skincare products for oily skin is cleansing, soothing, and reducing the amount of sebum on the skin's surface with astringent, hydrating, and soothing preparations.

10 TIPS TO CONTROL OILY SKIN

  1. Cleanse your face morning and night. Regular cleansing is crucial for oily skin, as it will remove excess sebum, dead cells, and dirt. Gentle facial exfoliation two to three times a week will be beneficial for oily facial skin.
  2. Choose non-comedogenic products, as they are specially designed not to clog pores, thus preventing pimples and acne. This rule applies to all products – from cleansers, moisturizers to makeup.
  3. Be gentle on your skin. Just because oily skin is thicker than other types does not mean it requires aggressive products and harsh rubbing. Aggressive products will dry it out, and rough washing will irritate the skin and stimulate sebum production.
  4. Avoid products containing alcohol, as they will further irritate and dry out oily skin. Natural ingredients that effectively, but gently address oily skin issues include: hyaluronic acid, which helps retain natural moisture, niacinamide, which helps soothe the skin, ceramides, key components for moisture retention, and retinol, which softens the rough texture of oily skin and reduces shine.
  5. Don't skip moisturizer, use cold-pressed oils. Oily skin needs moisture to achieve balance. Oily skin requires plenty of hydration. Excessive drying of oily facial skin may result in even greater sebum secretion. It is a misconception that oily skin should not come into contact with oil because it will make it even greasier. However, if the oils are cold-pressed, they are a real blessing for oily facial skin. Cold-pressed evening primrose oil is particularly effective. Gently dab a few drops of evening primrose oil concentrate on your face and neck, then apply moisturizer. The result will be soothed skin, renewed epidermis, and radiant complexion.
  6. It is important to carefully choose makeup products. Let them be lightweight products, water-based. Replace conventional liquid foundations with mineral powder, which usually comes in powder form. The advantage of this type of powder is that it absorbs oil from the skin's surface.
  7. Always thoroughly remove makeup from your face before going to bed! It is not desirable for any skin type to go to bed with makeup on, but for oily skin, it is disastrous because it is a type of skin where pores can easily become clogged, triggering the formation of pimples and acne.
  8. Regular facial tissues are reliable allies in the daily battle against oily shine. When oily skin becomes very shiny, gently press the affected areas with a facial tissue to absorb excess oil. It is not advisable to rub oily skin with tissue as it will further irritate it.
  9. Throughout the day, it is not advisable to touch oily skin with fingers, as this will transfer dirt, oils, and bacteria. If you really need to touch your face, be sure to wash your hands beforehand.
  10. Never, but never squeeze blackheads, whiteheads, and pustules to quickly solve the aesthetic problem. You will create a bigger problem because you can damage the skin, create wounds, and the crater you dug on your face can turn into a permanent scar.
